Hi. My name is Luka, I'm 18 and live in Sydney, Australia. I've only really known about Riot Grrrl for about a year- which is terrible I know, but I never knew anything like them existed until I did one of my major HSC assignments on women in the music industry, and got reading last year. I personally love Riot Grrrls because they believe so much in what they do. Meaning this with the utmost respect and admiration, these grrrls don't let the technicalities of performance get in the way of their political message. Which to me, is exactly the way music should be. And besides, Riot Grrrls make fantastic music! My favourite bands are fairly typical for a communitry like this, I suppose: Bikini Kill, The Slits, Sleater- Kinney, Cadallaca, Team Dresch, Bratmobile, Julie Ruin, The Capricorns, The Frumpies, Jack Off Jill, Julie Ruin, Excuse 17, Chicks On Speed, Heavens To Betsy, 7 Year Bitch, Ani DiFranco (I could go on all night). I love socially political movies like Requiem For A Dream and In The Name of the Father, but lately am increasingly interested in films which deal with notions of gender and sexuality (think But I'm A Cheerleader). I also adore old horror flicks. I love socially and politically important works like Solzhenitsyn, and I love nineteenth century literature, like the Bronte sisters. I'm anti- gender, as well as being into your typical green left-wing politics. That's me, more or less! |
